Just finished the daunting paint task of this beast. not as bad as I thought, and still a few ideas of how to bring out the metallic sheen. Going to try to experiemnt here soon.

It'll be interesting to see what you come up with for the metallic sheen. I was thinking of thinning Alclad aluminum about 95% thinner, and spraying very light coats and slowly build up a sheen. I've seen the real thing, and from some angles and in certain lighting conditions, it looks like regular old flat paint. But in just the right circumstances, there is a definite metallic effect. There is a product called "Raptor Sheen" that you can add to the paint, but it seems you're already finished with the painting. Which shades of grey did you use? According to Lockheed, "Due to the stealth properties of the coatings applied to the F/A-22, the Raptor's appearance in photographs is somewhat different that what might be expected based on the use of the standard FS paint numbers listed here. The topcoat color is a function of viewing angle; therefore, it cannot be represented by a FS color. This is due to its primary function which is not a color coat. The generic FS-595 numbers of 36173 and 36251 are provided for painting an F/A-22 model."

Bill. I converted the colors to model masters using paint4models.com. I used gloss gull gray for the main fuselage and light ghost gray for the fuselage camo. However it didn't seem quite dark enough so i tried to just do a manual camo pattern covering up the primer on the vertical stabs and that worked better. For the outer trim i used duck egg blue...also from model masters. They seem pretty close to me. For the sheen i tried initially to use a very watered down mixture of testors silver mixed with the paint that i was currently applying. This came out a bit too silver and was difficult to gauge the mixture so i think Im going to wait until after i finish the decals and then mix the silver wash in with Future for the final gloss coat. Im hoping to have better success with this.

Cool - can't wait to see it. I've got the Revell 1:72 Raptor in my stash along with the Big Ed set. Someday soon I'll get to it.

Just curious - which GSI Creos (Mr. Color) paints did Hasegawa recommend?
