Tamiya 1:35th Panzer PzII Ausf.F/G project

Scale:
1:35
Status:
In progress
Started:
November 30, 1996

I had my first PzII at the same time I purchased the Tamiya SAS Jeep. Both were started but never finished back in the 1990's. Returning to the hobby in 2020, I've started dusting off old projects to help get my skill back up before taking on more complex kits.

My original PzII was partly painted by brush with Humbrol enamels. First job was to strip this all off and dismantle the build so far in order to start from scratch. When looking for replacement decals (the originals looked shot) I discovered this little kit was still readily available and at such a cheap price tag....so I brought 4 more with the idea of painting one in each unit/colour scheme offered in the kit.

These were the very first vehicles I tried airbrushing with acrylics, and also the guinea pigs for trying out shading, highlights and chipping using the hairspray technique.

They've gone from test pieces to a project I now want to finish properly and display....but are on hold momentarily while I sort out a plan and pluck up the courage to do the weathering properly!

the Eduard PE kit makes the humble Tamiya kit look brilliant
I decided to try my hand at PE with this kit as it was simple & cheap kit

It is a great improvement! Get the Bronco tracks as well.

@Dave @Marder - these are being kept deliberately as out-the-box, as they're intended more of a learning project for airbrushing and weathering....... but as already said, they're such fun kits to do and with such a low price tag I'll likely add more to the stash at some point to experiment with some aftermarket 👍

Rob, You bring back fond memories of my first ever 1/35th scale kit. But that was in 1970's. I can still feel the excitement of opening the cardboard box on a bench close to Notre Dame in Paris. The shop was close by but I lived in the western part of the city.
Looking forward to seeing the completed team...

@ Olivier - glad you like my work on this project so far! It's amazing the memories and emotions that we can connect to model kits at times. The excitement of opening a new kit box and discovering the parts within still continues with me after 45 years!

@ Marder - it appears some of the early armour released by Tamiya have a few errors in details here and there. However, for the purpose of this project it's not an issue for me as they're deliberately being built out-the-box - though I can certainly appreciate the problems it could cause other builders in their projects!
