In 1956, the UK donated 16 Hawker Hunter F Mk.6 to the Iraqi Air Force. Nevertheless, one of the aircraft (serial number 399) crashed on 20 November 1956 in the English Channel during pilot training in the UK while flown by 1st Lt G Mahmmoud. The pilot ejected safely but landed in the cold water and died of hypothermia. Eventually, the remaining 15 machines arrived in Iraq in April 1957 Iraq and were assigned to the No. 6 Squadron.
All 15 Hunter F.Mk.6s from this batch were upgraded to F.Mk.59 standard already before the June 1967 War.
