I couldn't resist getting this very old Airfix kit as a nostalgia build as I built this kit over 40 years ago as an 11 yr old 🙂

Nostalgia will do that from time to time. The Monogram Huey Cobra Combo pack with the twin stand was one such acquisition I just had to have. I didn't actually build it but that set in particular as well as my father's F4U in 1/48th were two such builds that stand out most vividly in my earliest memories of childhood. Here is the real question; Will you build it out of the box or doctor it up this time though?

Indeed Edward! I built it OOB but this time I actually added the railings and removed the huge thick bases the figures stood on a of course painted with an airbrush, not a bloody great hairy stick that you could have used to paint your house with 🙂 Final reveal.......

Ah, there it is! A completed and quite nice air control tower. A genuine man's "doll house!" I do feel a bit sorry for the bloke with the binoculars - looks as though he took a 2 pounder to the back; Got to admire the mettle that allows him to still stand the watch after taking that wound and likely thrashing those poor bastards on the AA. 😉 Jokes aside, I think it turned out quite nice and I'm certain you enjoyed the memories of building this anew. Growing up I was only interested in aircraft models but likely would have liked to have had this one on hand to display with them. Only one shop in my region carried a very small stock of Airfix models otherwise they were special order items only. My Typhoon, Defiant, Wellington, Halifax, Ju-87B and B-29 I remember for certain were from the aforementioned shop or special ordered at my main hobby shop straight from Airfix. I hadn't a clue about mail order sites back then. In today's age, a few under half of my fellow citizens would probably balk at anything that commemorates a wartime scene, didn't have at least three minorities depicted, female members on staff or for that matter may just want a boy to have a bloody genuine doll house instead! That aside, good work on this piece, the paint work is great and excellent photos to show for the efforts. Cheers, Dave!

Album info

The focal point on any wartime airfield was the control tower. Often a distinctive feature situated in a prominent position close to the runways, the tower housed most of the vital back-up services required to keep the base operational. In it was housed air traffic control, the meteorological office, tele-printer room and general offices. Various types of tower were built, ranging from small two storey brick buildings usually found on fighter stations to the large structures found today.
