For more than a month I have had the kit and I could not wait to start. But on principle I only do one project at the same time. Yesterday I unpacked the kit and started planning. I heard there was a mistake in the kit: the engine housing is too long, because it belongs to a later version (SH-2G). Unfortunately, I have to say that this is true🙁 However, I do not think that it should not be too complicated to correct this. Today after only one hour I had filled the hole in the transparent roof section and completed the first round of filling with plastic and super glue the front part of the engine housing.
More tomorrow when the glue has dried... I think, the housing is 6-7 mm to long (see sketch).

Hey Bernhard! I´m couriously watching your WIP as I want to build this kit also one day.

Bernhard Schrock
I solved half of the problem in about 2 hours and it was not that hard. Thanks to the super glue and plastic there was no need of using putty🙂

EME 2014 in Heiden was a good motivation and the cockpit has grown a bit. A few days ago I found some astonishing pictures in a forum.

scalemodels.ru/modules/forum/viewtopic_t_51604.html

However, I do not really like the amount of detail, especially in the cockpit and on the rotor head... 🙁

The windscreen is a true puzzle too! That is what I was afraid of most. Honestly I do not know what the designer might have had in mind. But: it is done! Pics tomorrow... Zzzzzz

Bernhard Schrock
Finally the fuselage-puzzle is done! Now I'm going to start doing what I like best about modeling: painting and airbrushing🙂

Wow Bernhard, this not a buildthread its a tutorial for scratchbuilding! Awesome work! Remarkable!👍👍👍
12 May 2014, 14:38
Murad ÖZER
superb work with the Instrument Panel, how's the fit of the windshield and other clear parts btw? 👍
12 May 2014, 14:42
Bernhard Schrock
Thank you Holger. I'm always very glad to find a researched built. This save a lot of time. Because of that I would like to share my research results with other Seasprite - enthusiasts.

Sorry, but: LMAA!!!
12 May 2014, 16:29
Bernhard Schrock
Thanks Murad! The fit of the windscreen on upper side is OK (8 of10). It is not clearly visible how the windscreen fits to all other sides because of lack on contrast (all parts are transparent). I think in a few days after airbrushing black and grey primer I will know more🙂
12 May 2014, 17:35
Holger Kranich
Hubert, da gebe ich Dir vollkommen Recht!😄

Hi Bernhard, great to see you progress on the Seasprite! great job so far
13 May 2014, 09:05
Bernhard Schrock
Hi Luc, thx. I'm glad that you like them.
Most people do not like yellow. But I do! Next step is grey-brown for radome, grey for antennas and NM for inlets.
13 May 2014, 20:30
Bernhard Schrock
Good news: the roof correction has worked! After applying of black (interior color) now it is visible that all clear parts fits🙂🙂-🙂
15 May 2014, 18:00
Murad ÖZER
Cold sweat eh? 😄 Glad it's a good fit, i really wouldn't want to be fiddling with those parts...

Hi mates. I suppose that most of the aircraft enthusiasts know the anti-skid areas on planes and helicopters. In most cases these are coated with special paint which contains sand. Many years ago I had an idea to create this on my TBM-3E firebomber #3 and I was surprised how realistic this looked. Today I have finished the anti-skid areas for my Seasprite and I would like to share this idea with you.
The basis were the decals from Caracal decals with the white lines around the antiskid panels. After masking all the white areas I airbrushed a thick coat (really thick) with unthinned paint (Humbrol) with very low pressure (0,7 bar). Approx. 5 min later I pressed 1500 micro mesh into the still wet paint and produced an uneven surface. This looks in my opinion very similar to the anti skid areas. See 2 last pictures.

Magnificent!!! very accurated work so far...I realy enjoy it watching and reading all the complete post. Keep motivated Bernhard! good luck!!

Thank you Marc, especially for wishing me having motivation. I will need that (and a lot of patience) urgently because with the main rotor🙂 Look with the link to the russian modeling forum. Then you know what I mean.
19 May 2014, 16:55
Marc A.
I understand, but the true is that when some one as us get involve in such complete projects things like those 557.645 pieces 😄 give us that alive sensation...
That main rotor looks as.., how do I say it...challenge, big one!.
Keep working and I know for sure that it will be a top work!!!

If you think, you have waitet for information long enough: it is always too short. See my "experiences" with the MAD-Detector🙂
21 May 2014, 05:06
Marc A.
Marc A. Well, that is true!. But we're realy mad(?). Yes!, some times the project or the currently work possesion us, and then is when people think the mad that we are, or even by our self. It dosen't matter, right!, we are happy. It's something called "Being a modeller" thinking to get all de info and complet the job as better as real one is!...you going is right direction 😄

27 May 2014, 06:50
Bernhard Schrock
Hi Dirk,
colorserver.net/showcolor.asp?fs=16081

27 May 2014, 06:50
Dirk Heyer
👍

Yesterday I had a bit of fun detailing the complicated wiring on the undercarriage. Are the sovjet helicopters constructed more simply? With all three helicopters from Mil Mi it was not half as complicated. It is probably because the Seasprite has retractable landing gear. Good thing I am an electrician by training🙂

That was very nice comment, Bernhard! I agree with you on 100%. And I found 2 powerful ways to improve - complement other for nice work and asking more experienced guys, observing models, searching for something you really like and try to replicate.

Hehe, you speak Polish, Bernhard. Are you originally from Poland or...? I can understand some from Polish, it is similar to Russian. And I completely agree, our hobby is so international and thanks to Tim for this web page where we can met and chat. Even better then Facebook 🙂

Dzień dobry. Yes, I'm born in Gdańsk and I'm since 1980 with my parents in Germany. Write please any words in your mother- language. I'm curious how much I could understand.

I wonder if you can read cyrilic, but I will try in 2 ways. Here is translation on what you said to me: Moj polskij nemnogo zarzavel, no k scastju moja zena govorit po-polski
It is even spelled very similar😉

Viele Jahre her...

Hi Bernhard, I was in Cologne in 2000 and 2001 as well, unfortunately before my scale modeling era. Spent 3 or 4 months in total and then got guitar amp Marshall from there... Heh Long time ago 🙂 Nice city

Hi Nikolajs. Nice to hear from you! Did you and your wife manage the flights well? 🙂. Sun in Cyprus? We have full sun and 26* in KR; too much for modeling in my "plane lab" under the roof... I think, I will make a little bicycle trip. Have a nice vacation!

Meanwhile the first phase of the project is done; Seasprite has all "fixed" parts. Next phase (rotors) maybe next week

Hi Bernhard! The flights were good, no turbulence at all and soft landing. The only challenge was that we arrived at 2:00am, while hotel checkin is at 2:00pm. We had to sleep on the hotel guest room sofa and then had a trip to Lemassol center. Unfortunately no modeling shops, but we found some other interesting stuff.

The weather is nice here. It is not too hot and the water is good enough even for my wife (that's exceptional🙂 ). The hotel service and food is great for 3-star hotel. So, I am satisfied very much 🙂

The only thing I miss is airbrush and scalpel 🙂
But I can observe how others are progressing😉 I like your Seasprite build - it is very accurate and full of details 🙂 Keep up good work😉 hopefully you can do hobby early morning or late evening if it's hot 🙂 warm regards!

When you say "I am kind of forced to go through with the detailing now"
what are you on about ?
what detail can there be left to do other than a little more paint work on the rotors ?
you're not going to put hairs on the carpet of cabin are you ? lol 😄

Sometimes you have to have to "courage" to brake off and start afresh. For example like on the blades of a SH-3.
23 June 2014, 19:49

Bernhard, I am stunned! You are a craftsman of great skill, fortitude and patience. What a beautifully detailed model you are producing of one of my favorite helicopters. I'm impressed and motivated to add more detail to my own kits. I tip my hat to you, sir! R/ Dutch

24 June 2014, 17:55

Thanks! Investing a view hours into small parts was worth it - a good modeling day! Dutch; compared to model builders who invest one year into a model I'm not really patient. Sometimes I'm very impatient and just want to finish. Sometimes I get to a point when time becomes of no importance and then I try to build everything I see. See for example today's "half hour"-progress.
24 June 2014, 19:15
Holger Kranich
Jawdroppin` stuff, Bernhard! What a hell of a rotorhead, build, model!!!
Fk, thats cool!👍

24 June 2014, 19:37

Bernhard! Great work! A half hour well spent! If I could just get the time and a little space. I don't even have a desk any more, what with three college students at home. Scratch that! One found a job in another part of the country and moved out today! But the problem remains. So I will adopt your mantra and work on half hour details. I disagree with Nikolajs. Thank you for the motivation. R/ Dutch

Nikolajs, you must be brave: I have not finished, I have forgotten the actuator for the linkage... And the topplate of the rotor looks nothing like the real thing.

Yes not bad but the screw on the right above, I would push 0.03 mm to the left!
No nonsense, horny work! 👍 👍 🙂
3 July 2014, 06:38

@Jonns: You say to the left? I thought it ought to be 0.2mm to the right and slightly up a bit. But then I do not have a truly "flat" flat screen monitor, so you are probably right!😉
3 July 2014, 11:36
Bernhard Schrock
You have good eyes when you can see this🙂.
How many colours has the rotor? Unfortunately to many! Blades and flaps; middle grey on top and black on bottom plus steel edges. Rotor head is a colour-patchwork to: different grays, steel, alu and rust here and there. The next step coming soon.
4 July 2014, 15:10

hats off to u, Bernard. thAt's a very inoressive build, research, and documentation. am also building the kittyhawk seasprite now, though I won't have time to do everything u have done & just intend to build out of the box, at the very least u have inspired me to correct the seat heights.

Hi Bernhard! This is in fact the nicest chopper I `ve ever seen! Scale modelling at it`s best!

That's probably the best model I've seen this year Bernhard. Magnificent work, the time and effort you have gone to clearly shows, well done.

What Bill sez, for me projects that take this long will stall eventually, this one otoh keeps getting better and better, like wine! 👍

Bernhard,it's not a whole lot of fantasy wrote. I dont do that. And the same can be said when I make comment on someone elses modelling. Being a modeller, you can appreciate the effort and skill another modeller goes to in making a model. And, in my opinion we do it for our own challenge first, the rewards come second and you are due for many of those if you enter a competition with it.
7 July 2014, 09:18
Felix Troschier
this will be most certailnly one of the finest helicopter models I've ever seen!
7 July 2014, 09:36
Jonns Pfeiffenberger
I think I'll leave that with the plastic modelling and play again with Lego 😭 Top job!! 👍
7 July 2014, 10:06
Dirk Heyer
Very nice details, Bernhard. I like the busy look of the rotor and the fine details you`ve done.
The Seasprite is truly a nice produced model and now, with all of your added details an eyecatching gem.

Stunning work! A real museum piece ! 🙂

Bäm! What a result!
7 July 2014, 13:27
Choppa Nutta
amazing work !! though the tail rotor looks a little weird with two blades grey, is that how the real heli was or is that the final job for this awesome model ?
7 July 2014, 13:36
Bernhard Schrock
Choppa, unfortunately I has no enough red paint for all blades....
Just kidding🙂 The original heli has two grey blades. Look one of the pics in the album.
7 July 2014, 13:41

Alter Schwede! Super! Jetzt fehlt nur noch das er abhebt! 👍
7 July 2014, 13:45
Choppa Nutta
Thats unusual, why did they do that I wonder ?
Anyhow, if you used a photo background your model would look real !! 🙂
7 July 2014, 14:03
Jens
7 July 2014, 14:25
Bernhard Schrock
Thank you all x1000!!!
Choppa: this is an excellent idea. I have a large poster of an airfield. Maybe tomorrow I will try to shoot a picture.
EME Heiden 2015: ??

Alan Rush
Incredibly impressive detail work Bernhard. The finished model is awesome and I have enjoyed your step-by-step photos and the care and patience you showed in adding in even the smallest bolt for realism. As Choppa said, with the proper background, it can be taken for real. Do you have any plans to enter this model in upcoming shows?
7 July 2014, 16:11
Aghis Barberopoulos
Stunning outcome!!!
7 July 2014, 16:18
Felix Troschier
incredible piece of work!

Hab mich an Bild 88 orientiert.

7 July 2014, 16:46
Bernhard Schrock
Thanks Alan. I plan to visit EME in Heiden next year and show my last finished models. I will attend the exhibition of IPMS Germany in Berlin Gatow this year as a visitor but maybe I will take the Seasprite....

Now all you've got to do is build a 1:48th scale heli carrier 😄

Jens

Awesome work! Brings back memories of visiting my friend at NAS North Island in the '80's! I was a Marine Air Traffic Controller and she was a Navy mech. She showed me all the safety wiring they had to put on the transmissions! Miss those days.
