Republic P-47D Thunderbolt
Razorback

Completed

15hrs

The Jo-Han kit allows you to build a Razorback or Bubble top version of the P-47D. The cockpit was sparse but I added an instrument panel and the pilot. I painted the aircraft with a lighter shade of OD, post shading around the panel lines to break up the monotone finish. I used a mix of kit decals and Eagle Strike insignia. The stand is built from a wood plaque and an image adjusted in paintbrush to fit on the plaque.
This aircraft was assigned to Lt. Thomas Bailey of the 361st FS / 356th FG. Zombie was the pet name for his wife. It was later reassigned to Capt Ronald J Upp, who kept the name, but flew with registration QI-U. Lt. Bailey, who flew 91 combat missions in Europe and counted the Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star, four Air Medals and the Purple Heart among his decorations, went on to serve as the Wisconsin Air National Guard commander until his retirement at the rank of colonel in 1979.
