U.S.M4A3 76 mm Sherman

This beautiful kit (includes transmission and turret interrior) is in my stash for a couple of years. I always wanted to build it but never did because of the tracks which are not state of technology ( one piede vinyl with wrong profile). Meanwhile a friend provided me the tracks, bogies and traction wheels of a Tamiya M4 kit. So its time to start this project now.

Hi Christian,
wish you a lot of fun with your Sherman built. Do you like to use the vinyl tracks? If you think to do a change and you want to select an alternative track for your M4A3 have a look at this fine cast tracks!

Garfield Ingram, the owner of Track 48 is absolutly reliable and he like it to see your products on his homepage later! 🙂 I have him in mind as an enthusiastic modeller and distributor!
He like also aircrafts in scale 48!

Hi Dirk,
thanks for this hint. As written above a friend of mine provided me the tracks , bogies and traction wheels of a Tamiya M4A1 kit which I plan to use. They are no seperate links but I think they are o.k. for my purposes. If they make difficulties when I adopt them the gaso.line tracks may be an alernative.

Hello Sherman specialists,
I need your support . As a plane builder I am not so familiar with the paints used in tanks. I started to build the engine and transmission. I am a little unsure about the colors to use. The instruction says: All surfaces insinde (hulls and turret), gear box housing, air filters, Fans: white, Cylinder block( V type in line engine): blackish iron? , valve covers: olive drab?, cardan shafts, air tubes: black; not stated are : Color of air cleaner assembly, pulleys of the fan belt drive
Can somebody confirm these colors?
Does somebody have a foto of the engine to add the ignition wires, as well as fotos of the inner turret ?

Stefan, 30 years ago I buit nearly the whole 1/72 Esci tank kits. I also built Airfix´s sailing ships like Wasa, etc.. I am focused now on planes now (got no reference about tanks 🙂. This will only be an intermezzo. Also to try some of the painting technics of the tank builders. Maybe they can be adapted for plain paintin. Furthermore it is a scale for planes 🙂

Have fun during your vacation Lemmy, looking forward to see how the Sherman comes to life. Are you goin' to display it solo or in a diorama setting ?
5 April 2012, 13:37
Christian Lehmann
Hi Wilfried,
in a first step it will be solo withnthe crew. In a second step it is intended to use it on a small diorama with some additional figures.

Progress is slow at the moment because of less motivation but during eastern the duckbills have been bent and mounted at the track; tracks have also been pre painted

Today I also get the aluminum gun barrel that my father turned by using the original plastic part as sample

Your father? Great!
9 April 2012, 20:41
Christian Lehmann
This is no problem for him, he has more than 40 years experiance in turning, milling etc. He is retired now for a couple of years has a lot of time and likes challenges like this. I could also do this by myself but he owes the turning machine and has the time to do this

Your father did a great job on the barrel.

I´ll tell this to him.

Nicely done barrel Lemmy, congrats to your dad !

@ Phil: worked well, the results are best displayed on the gear box and the block of the gun. I did it on the floor too but the contrast between aluminum and whit is less o the foto does not show the result very well. I used it at Slave I too.
@ Wilfried: Thank´s.

Hi Lemmy, next time you can try to give floor first a alclad layer, than sale it with a enamel clear cote, a hairspray cote, give it than a light or dark brown layer and then the wite, maybe is the contrast better? try this first on a pace of plastic, this is just a idea 🙂 greetz Phil
