TALIBAN
American forces clashed with lightly armed Taliban fighters during the invasion of Afghanistan and campaign to eliminate al-Qaeda. Although the Taliban were equipped mostly with small arms, RPGs and mortars, these weapons were a threat to US aviation assets in flight and on the ground.

PAKISTAN
Though Pakistan was technically a US ally, political relations have always been tense. Direct conflict was narrowly avoided between US forces and Pakistani interceptors during the raid on Osama Bin Laden's compound in Pakistan.

ISLAMIC STATE (DAESH)
Much like al-Qaeda, Islamic State was a Salafi jihadist movement founded in 1999, but rose to prominence in 2014. In that year, Islamic State took advantage of weak government military forces in the aftermath of the US invasion of Iraq and the civil war in Syria. ISIS captured military equipment from Iraqi and Syrian military forces, and successfully recruited people with the training to operate that equipment. Islamic State was eventually defeated in Iraq and Syria by 2019, but factions still exist in Libya, Somalia, and other Islamic nations.

SYRIA
While Syria and the United States shared a goal to eliminate Islamic State insurgents occupying Syria, the US forged alliances with factions rebelling against the Syrian government as well as fighting against Daesh. When US forces operated with these factions inside Syria, they exposed themselves to hostile Syrian action.

IRAN
Iran was opposed to Daesh and deployed military forces to Iraq and Syria to combat them. Iran has traditionally also opposed the United States and Israel. Iran sponsored attacks not only on Daesh, but also US forces in Iraq and Syria. Iranian forces deployed to Syria used the opportunity to equip Hezbollah and help the launch attacks into Israel. Several hostile incidents have occurred between the US and Iran over Iraq and Syria.
