2B-Adversaries: Russian Federation (1991-2001)

Though the USSR collapsed in 1991, the former Soviet Air Force (VVS) and Air Defense Forces (PVO) carried on under the Russian Federation until they were merged in a 1998 re-alignment. Russian aircraft continued to brandish the red star markings until 2010.

During my military service, the VVS tested US Air defenses and performed signals intelligence missions near Alaska through 1994. The US responded in kind, and were frequently intercepted by PVO aircraft. US aircraft were often well within reach of PVO long-range SAM systems. Following a brief period of warming relations, Russia resumed aggressive maneuvers near US Navy ships operating in the Sea of Japan, starting with a flyover of the USS Kitty Hawk in October 2000. This was the beginning of another Cold War resurgence led by Vladimir Putin, who was named Prime Minister in 1998. This collection contains Russian aircraft and air defense equipment that were a direct threat to US forces during my time in service.
