Torpedo Bomber Douglas (Devastator)

Album image #1
Box art

Album image #2
First bits of resin assembled and some interior paints applied.
The resin radial engine (not shown) drew first blood as I used my razor saw, second blood with a croc clip pinging off (which I'd been using to keep my fingers away from said razor saw) and third blood of a sort when I nearly superglued two fingers together. :-D :-D
(No I haven't chucked it out the window, it's just out of the photo.)

Album image #3
Bit more interior paint work.

Album image #4
The aforementioned offending/offensive engine. Needs a bit more work yet.

Album image #5
Aft twin machine guns assembled, various other bits ready for assembly soon.

Album image #6
Interior almost ready to seal up... the two fuselage halves are almost meeting due to some surgery on the cockpit parts but Mr Filler and Mr Surfacer will be making an appearance...

Album image #7
If I hadn't unboxed this myself, I could believe that this was a Bertie Basset / Frankenstein kit bash from several different kits merged together.

These wing tops and bottoms don't even have the same silhouette (OML, "outer mould line", as we'd call it at work) - there's going to be some serious slicing, shaving, filing, sanding and filling in my future.

Call me fussy, but I like parts to have at least a passing acquaintance with each other :-D :-D

Album image #8
See, this is the sort of thing I'm pulling my hair out* with - this gun ring should fit inside the fuselage - see next photo.

* what little remains of it.

Album image #9
Not my photo, off t'interwebz, but look: this is how that gun ring *should* fit!!

Album image #10
Looking "a bit plane" now.

Filler then Mr Surfacer.

This kit has drawn blood twice now :-D

Album image #11
The Devastation (!) continues... I think I'm going to have to use a low resolution camera from now on to hide the many, many flaws, bodges and general ick. *sob*
Not my finest work!!

Album image #12
The decals/markings I'm doing - T-1 Bu.No. 0285, VT-2 off of USS Lexington at the Battle of Coral Sea, 1942.

Album image #13
The Devastation is finished - as good as I'm going to get it.

Album image #14
Doesn't look too bad at this distance

Album image #15
Just don't look too closely

Album image #16
Torpedo ready to launch, and bomb aimer's window open.

Album image #17
Rear cockpit retracted to poke the guns out

Album image #18
Landed amongst my USN Pacific CAG - Avenger (its successor) hovering ominously behind it.

I have always wanted this kit. But this kind of thing is what makes me still not decided to have it, while I keep hoping that some manufacturer will release a more decent Devastator than this one from AZ and the one from Valom.
You're doing a good job of fighting 👍

I think we should start sending begging letters to Tamiya, Airfix etc. to make a nice modern tooled one where parts that are supposed to join together actually fit together for a start :-D

We should push Airfix to update their 1969 tool 😛

I remeber that the tail wings does not have holes to fit....

Yep, just flush surface on the fuselage to butt the tailplanes up against 🙄

Any resemblance to an aircraft at the end is going to be purely coincidental... !!

It looks like a devastator from here.
The journey may be hard, but it will be worth it in the end.
