AREA 88 : "Supersonic Goddess"

Album image #1
Ahhhh… a nice fresh box, full of possibilities…

Album image #2
…and not much else. This kit is pretty straightforward I guess.

Album image #3
This is a box I’ve seen before… almost like an old friend,

Album image #4
Quite a bit more going on here. There are even some choices to be made.

Album image #5
The small F-5E engines will be a challenged. Not enough room for two LEDs, so I’m going to have to split the light.

Album image #6
Already a tight fit. Trying some hot glue to diffuse the LEDs.

Album image #7
Kits came together nicely, but I still have to get some pilots in the cockpits.

Album image #8
That’ll work, I think.

Album image #9
Almost didn’t fit under the canopy, but with a bit of careful squeezing, I got them inside.

Album image #10
Now for Kim and Sera. Since it’s being flown by a woman, I used a smaller, skinnier figure… not that anyone can tell.

Album image #11
Hmmm… there may have been some dust on the plastic. Looks like I’ll need to wipe the paint off and try again.

Album image #12
Kim and Sera in place, time to button this one up.

The F-5 engines are too small/close together for double LED lights, so I have to use a bit of hot glue to diffuse the light. And the F-4 Interior needed the guts cut out of it to make room… the Platz kits are a bit more built like a toy… given their roots. So they come built sturdy when snap assembled.

The Platz kits are nice, but definitely not in the same class as the Revell. Oh, well, these are in the supporting role in this project, so good enough. Empty cockpit, but once you cram a pilot and an ejector seat in there and seal he pretty thick canopy, no one will notice.

Ok, bringing this one back down off the shelf. Must've been a while, because after one coat of paint I noticed an awful lot of dust suddenly appear. 🙂

👍 Glad this has come back around as I'm hoping your masterful efforts in 1:144 will inspire me to get my F5 back underway. Also a supporting cast member to a larger project. FAR F-5A Freedom Fighter | Album by Erebus Nyx (1:144)
Just can't seem to get going on it, too easily distracted. 😄

For that one... I blame the kit, not you. 😉

Not sure if I should tell you this or not, but since you're making it a supporting part of a larger (presumably 1/144 scale) project... That kit isn't 1/144 scale. It's more like 1/120. I had a lot of trouble with it myself - not really with building such a simple kit, but just couldn't justify the size difference. In the end, I binned it and then back-dated (successfully at least in my eyes) a much better Ace boxing of the beautiful Revell F-5E. It was basically just a trim on the wing roots and new wing tips if I recall, but you can check out the process and the result here - AREA 88: "The Olive Grove" (F-5A) | Album by strobez (1:144)

thanks for the heads up Greg. Loved your F-5A finish. The colours looks amazing. I see what up mean about scaling. I'll have to plan some sort of forced perspective thing when the Boeing hoves into view for photos.

Thanks Gary. I'll tune it to see if you can manage the forced perspective... it would be nice for this kit to have something to contribute. I should be kinder and not let my hatred for off-scale kits get the best of me... it's just when they lie about their size that I can't stand it. 😉

Meanwhile... we have some grey paint over decals... it's an experiment.
