Last year at the IPMS USA Nationals, I bought the Starfighter resin cockpit upgrade. They didn't have the decal set in stock, but found it a couple tables over at Rare Plane-Detective.
Interior was painted with Testors Aluminum, and used an AMMO by MIG wash to highlight the details.
The Yahu instrument panel was way too wide, and I had to trim 1mm each side to get it to fit. The one I used is for the Hawk 75, but it looks close enough for me.
Had to cut into the upper wing halves for the resin gear wheel well bay detail to fit. Used the AMMO wash there as well.
Cut off the rudder and elevators. Will remount them later, in an offset position.
Had to putt a shim along the front of the fuselage/lower wing to fill the gap.

The Starfighter Decals directions make note that the P-36A doesn't have wing guns. So I cut off the barrels and filled the Shell Ejection holes in the bottom of the wings.
Masked the main gear wells, tailwheel area, and cockpit.
Sprayed with Tamiya 1500 Primer. Masked off the ailerons and sprayed with Testors Aluminum.
I am planning on using a couple different brands/types of Aluminum paint to try to create different shades of the panels. So I forsee a lot of masking in my future…

2 hours masking for a 5 minute paint… so far used Testors Metallic Silver for the ailerons and elevators, Humbrol Metalcote Polished Aluminum for the Wingtips, Rudder tip, and horizontal stab tips. Next up is Tamiya Gloss Aluminum. The leading edges, flaps, and fuselage will be done with AK Aluminum. Hopefully there will be a subtle difference in the panels - and all this will have been worthwhile!

Last bit of masking. The cowling is three colours, Red,Yellow and Blue. Will paint that before finishing the Silver.

This is for me one of the cool things about hanging out in these modeling forums. I have this kit buried deep in the stash. Always enjoy how other modelers work the kit. I dug it out after seeing this post and it looks like I too have the AM upgrade from Starfighter. If it ever makes it to the bench my plan is one around the Pearl Harbor attack. I am taking notes on what you are doing. Thanks

As I wrote at the beginning, your build always worth a visit thanks to your skills and fantastic devotion!

Thanks Robbie and Moreno.
The P-36A I am modelling was flown by the Group Commander, so all three squadron colours are represented on the cowling. Humbrol 15 Blue, 19 Red, and 69 Yellow used.

Used a black panel wash for the ailerons and cowl flaps. I Think the black is a little to dark for the cowl flaps though, wish I had used a grey or grey-blue so there wasn't so much contrast..

The decals handle great and went on very easily. Printed by Cartograph… The fuselage colour stripes didn't go all the way around. Not sure if they are suppose to….
The canopy was not a good fit. The front frame was difficult to mount to the fuselage. Left the main section opoen.
The gear legs had a down-brace that was molded too short, and very wide. Replaced that with some plasti-card.
Mounted the prop.
Added a bit of AMMO by Mig Wash, from the cowl flaps and exhaust.
Thanks to all those that followed along and commented.

Looking at some pictures of the real thing, there are radio wires running from the wingtips to the tail.
Need to drill a few small holes, and then add EZ-Line.
