Piece of cake, right? (Knock on wood).

With a little time making sure the boom halves are aligned properly, and gluing the horizontal stabilizers first (checking that the vertical tails are at 90 degrees), it aligns itself pretty well.

I had forgotten about the ID lights. So, I carefully drilled out a little bowl. Chrome paint will go in, then the corresponding clear colors, then I'll fashion little lenses from bondic.

That PE really added a lot to it.

Hi Derek! I have the same kit in my stash. So i'm watching your build with interest. I heard the fit of the plastic parts is not so good. What do you think? On your pictures it don't look so bad.

What paint scheme will you use? I am hoping to see someone do the Rough 'n' Dirty some day 😄

Stefan, this is my second Academy P-38 so I know a bit about what to expect. The P-38 is a deceptively complex aircraft, and how Academy chose to engineer the kit doesn't do the build many favors. The fuselage is molded in both wings, and then 3 other other parts. There is no positive location. Getting the correct alignment for the booms and wings just takes some time and forethought. I suggest looking at the jig setup on paulbudzik.com.

Vegard, I haven't decided for sure which scheme, but it will be in natural metal finish.

B. Nice, lots of little details in this kit really improve on Academy's efforts. The Brassin cockpit they include is beautiful.

You got the Rough n Dirty scheme in that box, and it is in natural metal finish(twink twink)😎 LOL
What ever you choose, I am watching with interest. Looking really good so far! 🙂

That's true! I'll consider it but no promises 😉

Vegard, after some consideration, I'm going to do the aircraft on the box art. It has just enough color to really pop but not be busy.

That is a cool choice too mate 👍 I have no say in it, but I just had to ask!! Thanks for considering it though 😄 I'm excited to see the results from your beam alignment. How's the latest process?

Thanks everyone! This build is dragging on a lot longer than I had anticipated. I hope to have it finished this weekend. Then, I think I'm going to start Tamiya's new Tomcat built in flight as a Christmas present.

Fantastic work so far Derek. Have the Academy boxing in the stash and it looks like it need some aftermarket stuff too😄. Eager to see the end result! 👍
