You had me with the initial photo - just a terrific, eye catching piece Steve.
Please don't take this mere comment as a critique in any way, but I started to look for residual spray on the fuselage (say, between the dorsal and rear turrets) seems to be almost missing in my mind's eye. How did you do the spinning props? I am a big fan of those and the pilot and the resin and the ... do pray tell more about the build, techniques used, etc.
Just marvelous! Cheers

fantastic diorama, great idea, and really well executed. I would say that the propellers are clear acetate with some black/dark grey airbrushing? but I would love to know how you did the water.....

Thanks guys,
I stumbled on the prop technique purely by accident. As Spanjaard surmised it is clear acetate, masked into 4 quadrants and sprayed with black enamel, darker in the center of the blade blur and feathered out to the maskings. My airbrush was spitting at the time and I was unhappy with the results, so I started to clean it with alcohol to avoid damaging the plastic. As I started to rub the paint off starting on the edge where the mask was I noticed this effect. I then applied some alcohol to the edges of the rest of the blurs and gently wiped away the edges to create the effect.
JW,
The water is made similar to my other water builds, from Styrofoam covered with printer paper with acrylic gel applied over it to create the waves. These waves were painted, sanded and repainted. This method was used until I was happy with the effect. The wake is acrylic gel and cotton. The spray is polly-fil. This is the first time for me to use this material and I am quite please with the results. The residual spray is a simple fix by spraying some thinned acrylic varnish to simulate wetness and I'll fix that tonight, thanks for the mention. I plan on showing it at an upcoming IPMS contest so anything I can fix now is appreciated.
The pilots were pressed into service from a 1/72 Luftwaffe pilot and ground crew pack I had lying around, much to their objections.
Thank you for looking in and I appreciate your comments.

Album info

I just completed the Academy 1/72 PBM-5A Mariner.
I was very happy with this kit, the fit and decals were excellent as well as the detail. The cockpit could use a little work but it was decent. If you build this kit I have just 2 recommendations.
First, the nose turret would probably be easier to install if it is installed prior to closing the fuselage rather than shoehorning it in later as the instructions state. Second, there is some surgery required to allow the wing to sit properly on its saddle.
The seams were very small and needed very little filler and sanding.
Comments and Critiques welcome.
Steve
