This is a partially scratch build using a Trumpeter USS England kit as a basis. I start this conversion in 2009 but did not finished it so far due to a lot of other projects of my interest. One day I will finish this boat – hopefully.

Wow, Christian, I'm really looking forward to this project being continued ! What is this device that you scratchbuilt ? Is it an hedgehog launcher or something like that ?

Magnificent build Christian, I assume you have some sort of plan of the ship for your scratch building or are you "eye balling" measurements, well done.

Thank you very much Hanno and Bill. The scratch build part is a Mk. 15 trainable Hedgehog Launcher. There is no after market, so I have to scratch it. I have no measurements etc. only some photos for the Hedgehog and for the whole model.
Most of the measurements are for sure eye balling, but I have Stefan Terzibaschitsch's Geleitschiffe der U.S. Navy (Escorts of the U.S. Navy) with side views of this class in scale 1:1000.

I'm constantly stunned by your abbility to handle the most tiny parts. I always have to cut some extra parts when scratchbuilding, because they keep shooting from my pincers into outer space. Do you use some extra fine pincers ? And if so, where can I buy them?
Speaking of buying, have you noticed that WEM has obviously gone bust ? I wanted to buy the Mach 3 Pibber in 72nd , and evrything is out of stock
for weeks . Looks like they have been purchased by someone.

Yep, unfortunately WEM is down, but there should be another source for it.

I understand that Tom's Modelworks will be taking on the WEM PE range but I don't know what the likely timescale is.

Many thanx Aghis. But you have to sit down for a while mate. The project is on hold and I post the status of work for some month to show it to Bill (hustler). By the way, does someone knows if he is still here on Scalemates. No news on his wall and all photos deleted from his projects?!

unique type of ship only used during the cold war. The DER was a part of the early warning line to prevent the US from attacks. They used land based radar stations airplanes and ships. Interesting history:

Album info

USS Calcaterra is a former Edsall Class Escort. After WWII, during the main stage of Cold War some of the boats were rebuild into Radar Picket Ships. They all formed the Distant Early Warning System around the US to spot any aggression or attack from the air. The upper works were enlarged to get more room for radar offices and crews. A main and foremast were added to carry additional radars sets. The boat had an armament of two radar controlled 3" guns in a small housing, a trainable Mk. 15 Hedgehog and some depth charges.
