I bought it quite a while ago, so this was good motivation to give it a try. Really my first airplane build since I was a kid, and back then the goal was to get it done fast. Put a bit more effort into it this time! I thought the overall gloss blue finish would be an easier first choice than the white, intermediate blue, dark blue option.

Hi Clifford. In my searching around, I have seen the SB2C-4 in 1/48 by Accurate Miniatures and by ProModeler and I think the SB2C by Monogram, but not the SB2C-4 in 1/48 by Academy.

Could be. I haven't seen that kit. Picked this up in 1/72 because it looked interesting and the price was right.

actualy if I am correct the accurate kit is basicaly the promodeler one with some different detail parts(propeller among others). having build the promodelers one i must say that the kit is quit impressive I choose to completely scratchbuild the wheelbay this took a while finishing it but look better than the one in the kit. I think you will enjoy the kit

As the clock ticks down I am close to closing the fuselage. The PE interior set and the cockpit mask were not delivered since they were never restocked. It seems they are not available I am hearing. So on I go with botched up instrument decals.

If this update shows up in your news feed, could you please let me know. In my news feed, sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't. Not sure what I am doing wrong. I upload the photos, but do I need to make a comment for the album to appear?

Thanks, I am glad it displayed. I put the fuselage together last night but see a couple of loose spots that need to be dealt with.

Wings are on. Some gaps to fill on tail and on front edge of wings at fuselage but the fit on the Academy kit was pretty good. Critique my crooked lines on my first canopy mask! Thanks Michael, Eric, Lionel, Holger and Clifford for the advice. Not too bad for a first try I suppose. Confident enough to try it on another kit.

It's looking Awesome Alan. Great job. I couldn't build it in 1/72 just to small. Can't see them anymore.

The deadline has passed and it is not finished. The overall blue is on, but I need many touch-ups. Landing gear, etc. and decals and wash for panel lines. More pictures are coming but start losing grade marks for late sumittal! Thanks for the encouragement.

Finally done. Only a month late. First airplane kit and have likes and dislikes with how it turned out. Thanks for the help with how to finish the canopy by making my own mask. I did press too hard and cut the plastic, so will be more careful next time. I hand painted the interior with Model Master Acryl green zinc chromate and used Model Master Dark Sea Blue spray can for exterior. You can see the egg shell finish from my bad spraying. The decals are from the kit and were a bit thick and didn't settle very well. At the last minute I decided to brush-paint a coat of Future at the end. It helped to cover the scratches on the canopy. Good chance to try the different techniques I have read about here on the site. Give me some honest feedback on the photos to help me for the next time around.

By the way, the upper antenna IS broken. My clumsy fingers and the last thing to fix. The underwing antennae have been broken off and reattached more times than I can remember.

Excellent Alan!!!! The only problem wich I can see in the pictures, if you wish to see a problem is the heavy coat of painting of the model, you can see in picture 32 for example. Why you don´t weathering the aircraft and you don´t make thee panels too. Next time try to make a little lighter the paint in the center of each panel..... 😉 Anyway, I think that you make a good model.

Looks good to me Alan. Did you airbrush it or paint it with a brush? Still looks good.

Thanks Jose. Yes the paint is thick. It was painted with spray can Clifford. I applied too heavily and had to sand a LOT of it off since it had run and pooled in places. I would have been better off brush painting and better off still if I started using the airbrush that I bought a while ago. Just don't have the set up I want with a compressor and ventilated painting space.

I still haven't quite perfected my airbrush set up either. Tink I am going to have to invest in a new compressor. My old one is very noisey and dances across the floor and overheats a lot. My latest project was sprayed with a can and I am not totally happy with the results either.

The compressor I have is a giant twin tank for airtools. I bought a regulator and moisture trap to try to convert it. Even if that works it will still only be for use outside. The plan is to give it a try this summer. Let you know if there are any explosions or paint disasters. Not in my budget to buy a hobby size compressor.

Great work, Alan! 👍 👍 I don't know how you guys (you aircraft modelers) do it, with all those tiny parts and details! The canopy looks great from where I am sitting! I could not do it, I guarantee it 😛 My respect! 👍 🙂

Thanks John. I wouldn't call myself an aircraft modeler since this was my first one. Won't say it is my last, but did think about that while building. Out of the few kits I have built, I noticed a huge difference between armour and air. Not exactly sure why, but perhaps it is because you don't have to mask and paint canopies on armour. That one job took a lot of time and patience.

I agree! It really is different. I have modeled a few airplanes long ago but I really just couldn't get decent results. I felt it was much harder. The canopy, yes, that was one of the hurdles I was unable to overcome😉 Even though there is the occasional windscreen or view port to mask in armored vehicles, it is just not the same 🙂
I think Jose made an excellent point in maybe trying to do some type of modulation to the individual panels to break the surface? Principle is (somewhat) the same as on armored vehicles but I must admit that to me it looks like a more difficult task on an airplane?😉
But no matter what, you did a great job here! 👍

👍 Looking good! I like it, Alan. On the photos the canopy looks big, but, I guess, the masking in 1:72 with that little windows must have been hell.

Wish I knew something about building Armor have never built a tank before only planes cars and ships and spacecraft. I once built a model of the USS Enterprise NCC-1701 and installed fiber optic lights and painted the whole Aztec pattern by hand one panel at a time. That was like in 1984-85

Why don't you take the plunge and join the Light Tank Groupbuild? Maybe you'll get hooked! I built my own Enterprise a couple of years ago and should post in an album. Did not feel confident enough to take on the wiring for the lights. Do you still have yours? Should post it if you do.

Hi Alan! Very good result for the first plane! As other said, interior is perfect! And remember my first experience with can - had to sand a lot😉 later I learned that I should do quick and short motions with can to get right result... Also I actually found a way how to fix orange peal. I sand it with 1200-2500 grit sand paper and apply Future with wide brush. Another way is to sand, polish and can also apply wax for high gloss.
I like your approach and attitude - great way to learn new things, and I hope to see another plane model from you some day😉 Keep up good work, Alan!

Alan if you are looking for a Cheap but good airbrush TCP Global makes a dual action airbrush it is called the G-25. It works very nice and is easy to maintain and clean. I think Hunter Cummings has the same airbrush. I only paid 25.00Usd for mine.

Thank you, Alan, nice to see people get some inspiration from your job😉
In regards to airbrush, I may try to guide you, if you wish - have tried more then 10 guns so far
Clifford, I had a look at G25 on the web. It has 0.2 nozzle. Which kind of paint have you been using so far and what is min and max diameter of pattern you can get from that?
