Me too. I've had my eye on this one as a companion to the PB4Y-1 that I'm building. I always thought the -2 was a much cooler bird. I love that big Erco turret out front and the "eyeball" blisters on the rear fuselage sides.

..-Meet the crew!
Just started this build..

Matchbox always did nice crew. You've painted them very nicely indeed.

A different approach to the PB4Y-2 compaed to my build. I like it.

Done some more work on this one.
Matchbox Groupbuild is over, -perhaps transfer to 'Naval Aviation'? 🙂

Well done.

Thanks,
-Attaching the tail fin.
Some problems here:
First the fuselage sides did not match up right at the root of the fin.
Then, when fitting the fin, I had to force it quite a bit to starboard in order to make it straight.
Will need a bit of putty and sanding..

Wing dryfit. -This one needs a bit of display space..
Engines and propellers painted.
Engine nacelles will need quite a bit of putty.

As a point of reference, American WWII prop tips were omly 4" which in scale * means that there is virtually no sides to the yellow paint. a quick look at wartime photo can be useful. * (1/18"😢

Peter Jenssen
Thanks Phil,
The yellow tips are decals, but a dab of black paint should fix them up.
Cut down the yellow to about half is what I'm thinking?

I have a couple of these and I an wondering how it fits
24 April 2014, 00:49
Peter Jenssen
Fit is not too bad, considering it is and old mould. (-It's not Tamiya.. 🙂 )
Wings need a bit of trimming to fit in their sockets, cockpit section needs some putty joining to the fuselage. There are some minor dimples here and there.
Care needs to be taken with the cockpit windows. -So far no show stoppers..
I was going to do the US markings, but they might be a bit questionable; Says in the instructions to represent a plane operating out of Palawan, Philippines.
Can not confirm this at all, rather 'Tortilla Flat' seems to have been an unarmed training plane at Camp Kearney, San Diego. Furthermore, it never had an Erco turret in the nose, but rather a Consolidated A6A.. 🙁
Should I care? -I haven't decided yet..
24 April 2014, 03:10
John Bollig
I have done some research on the privateer and many were equipped with the Bat bomb. I am going to make mine with the bat bomb. I can also confirm that that the plane was used in the Palawan area. As far as it not being tamiya, frankly I am not worried. My two privateers are both matchbox originals. So, they were from the first mouldings.

I did quick review on this kit about a 2 mos ago for Hunter for another build. A search might bring it up. bottom linej good baseline kit except outer nacelles...passable OTB.

Hi Phil, I found that the yellow prop tips increased from 4" to 6" in 1944.
That still means the Revell tips are about 30% too much. Perhaps reduce to about 2mm?
Your thoughts?

You ref picture did seem bigger than 4"l...the main concern is to avoid the paralle sides look so many models show...those can throw off the finished overall effect quickly. I think your " sufficently sensitized."
30 April 2014, 00:48
Peter Jenssen
Thanks Phil,
I had simply put the supplied decals on without checking. They were obviously too big.
I have now reduced them. Hopefully this will look more realistic.
Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

Looking forward to seeing this 2X4 . I like this plane. If you have a fine airbrush and are comfortable with its capabilities, many Privateers are in the true blended counter shaded scheme. see my PB2Y-5 Coronado as an example in 1:72.
30 April 2014, 13:13
Peter Jenssen
Thanks Phil,
I like the Coronado. I'll probably do something similar for the camo scheme on this one.
I have an old Badger dual action with swappable different size needles/nozzles.
I bought the Italeri WWII US Navy paint set and I'm trying it out now.
Good coverage, practical packaging. It was drying a bit too quickly and had a tendency to form little tiny strings (like dust particles) and start clogging the nozzle after a couple of minutes.
Found out afterwards that this paint should NOT be thinned with alcohol..
-Great! So next time I will not use Tamiya acrylic thinner (which smells distinctly of alcohol), I'll try a bit of distilled water instead.
Forgot to take picture. Will do that next time.

Something nice is definitely emerging as is the basic soundness of matchbox. Nice progress.

Looking very nice indeed.

All colours on, not quite done yet.
Italeri paint behaved nicely when thinned with water.
Never use Tamiya acrylic thinners for Italeri Acrylics!
It kind of works, but water is better..

Hunter Cummins
I like the colrs you chose
10 May 2014, 13:13
Peter Jenssen
Thanks everyone!
Colour choice is courtesy of Italeri WWII Navy aircraft paint set.
Probably accurate enough for me, though the codes are in FS codes which I don't believe had been invented yet instead of ANA codes that can be found in WWII regulations??

I noticed in the building instructions that there is no yellow for the back of the propeller tips.
Not that it matters anyway as I'm planning to do some weathering.
Back of the propellers would probably get the brunt of any weathering, so no yellow paint tips needed there! 🙂

An example of the full blending measure in which each of the colors were blended into the neighboring ones creating a five tone transitional scheme. Cover girl and peace feeler are also searchable,

Looking good so far

Hi Phil,
Thanks for the tip and the links!
I mixed up two new colours; white + light blue, and light blue + dark blue and applied them in a streak between the existing colours.
I didn't actually get five tones, more a full fade effect from white to sea blue.
Not sure if this is correct. All picture of the original scheme that I can find are in black and white.
What do you think?
18 May 2014, 00:32
Peter Jenssen
Thanks Dave!
18 May 2014, 00:34

I looked at my favourite (German) website for navy markings. A smooth transition is OK. Originally it was intended that the intermediate blue became a result of the mixture of sea blue and intermediate white. In reality they used intermediate blue directly ...
18 May 2014, 07:49
Phil Marchese
marc the blending measure were applied in various ways from time to time even on the same types. yes the Int blue was a base color however the reality is various blending meaures were used and that is was called out in spect. product rates dictated more economical ( efficent) methods but not to the exclusion of these other approaches in quantity examples on the large Patrol types.
18 May 2014, 10:37
Phil Marchese
Peter you got a nice counter blending. this was done various ways. it depends on the specific look you want. what you have certainly represents one historical version.

You really brought out the good features of this kit in a great way. I like the 7/8 frontal starboard overhead view. thanks for letting us tag a long on this journey.

Thanks!
Pretty straightforward build. needs a bit of putty and craving to make things fit right, but not too bad.
I don't have a lot of spare time, so builds tend to drag on for a bit.. 🙂
Put 5-6 decals on my Corsair last night.. :-/
