Personal Interest:
During my tour at Ft. Carson, Transportation companies of the 4th Infantry Division (Mechanized) operated the M939 5-ton truck and other trucks in that series to move personnel and cargo. One of these trucks, in the "Expando Van" series was assigned to be a mobile weather station by my detachment. I was often assigned to drive this vehicle, a task I did not particularly enjoy - especially when rail loading was involved. Although 4th Infantry did not deploy for Operation Desert Storm, the armor was nonetheless painted desert sand in case rapid deployment became necessary. M939 trucks were frequently operated on the Fort Carson reservation and the Piñon Canyon Maneuver Site for exercises.
